5 Reasons seafarers can’t spend holidays with their family

A timely message not just for Christmas but for all holidays year-round. It is a harsh reality that seafarers can’t spend holidays with their loved ones. We just have to accept it. This is the type life we choose. However, i wish that we wont spend times like this much longer.

At first, it is okay to be away from our families. But then as time goes by, opportunities to spend holidays with our loved ones become elusive. Thus, it’s as if seafarers has become immune to the feeling of being away.

There are factors that attributes to that. Sometimes, we are not in control. Here they are:

Reason # 1: Not enough funds

It is undeniable that having not enough funds is one of the main reason why a seafarer can’t stay much longer for holidays. As much as we want to stay, our pockets or bank accounts say otherwise. This forces us to go even if it is hard. Its never easy, never was and never will.

So unless you find another stream of income to finance your extended stay, then you will just be fine.

Reason # 2: Time constraints

If a seafarer’s contract finished around mid-year, then it is unlikely that he/she will stay in around for holidays. 3-4 months vacation is sometimes the maximum limit for seafarers. It is so sad that we have a limit on how much time we spend for our loved ones. Again, this is the life we choose.

There are other reasons that contributes to this. Seafarers sometimes intentionally miss one holiday or special occasion to be present to the next important one.

Reason # 3: Opportunity knocks

This is likely a promotion waiting for him/her. Well, this is acceptable. It is because opportunities rarely happen in someone’s career. It is never easy. It takes years to get this. So when this comes, take it even if it will costs holidays or special occasions with your family.

Reason # 4: Emergency cases

Another reason why seafarers can’t spend holidays with their loved ones is because of emergencies. There are various definitions of this reason.

First, emergency within the family. A family member is confined in the hospital and similar cases. This will prompt the seafarer to cut his vacation short and request an immediate line-up. Unless he/she has medical insurance, or emergency fund, then the cost will be minimal.

Second, onboard emergency. An emergency that needs crew repatriation. And somehow, you are one of the qualified crew to replace him/her.

Reason # 5: We are just not in control

Sometimes, we are not just in control. No matter how well we planned, even down to every detail, there is going to be a screw up. These are the things that we didn’t see coming. As you know, we are contractual in nature and when the phone rings, we either pick it up or just let it ring.

Even when we desire to be with our families, there are things like extended contracts, delayed arrival/departure, unfit/unavailable reliever, etc. This kind of events are out of our control even if we want it to be.
