The new MARINA circulars paved the way to a new set of examination system for seafarers. Thus, leading to have a new set of competencies and functions. This blog lays out MARINA theoretical exam functions and competencies which you should know in advance.
In order to pass this exam, the examinee needs to score at least 70% per competency and 70% per function. With this, you can target on where you should invest studying in.

Deck Operational Level
12 competencies comprise the theoretical examination for OIC-NW on ship’s 500 GRT up. In addition, C6, C8, C14, C15, C16, C18 and C19 shall be in accordance to STCW SectionA-VI.
Deck Management Level
Meanwhile, the management level deck theoretical exam consists of 18 competencies. Additionally, C7 and C19 shall be in accordance to STCW Section A-VI.

Engine Operational Level
12 competencies makes up the theoretical examination for OIC-EW on ship’s 750 kW up. Furthermore, C12, C13, C14 and C17 shall be taken in accordance to STCW Section A-VI.
Engine Management Level
There are 14 competencies in the theoretical examination for engine management level on ships 750 kW up.
Pass each theoretical exam functions and competencies
The easiest way to pass the whole examination is to pass each competencies. However, if you fail at one competency, make sure that your overall function average shall not be below 70%.
Therefore, you need to score 7 in 10 item competencies. 14 out of 20 item competencies and so on. A good practice is that you only try to limit your mistakes to 3 per competency and you will pass.
