“Good day sir, Im a MARINA COC holder but wasn’t able to use it onboard as an officer. Now it’s about to expire. What will I do?”
This is a common question we’re receiving on our social media channels. What to do when you haven’t use your license? Let’s discuss that in this blog.
Oversupply of MARINA COC?
As you came to notice, there are plenty of MARINA passers almost everyday. There is no way all of them can use their license and become a full pledge officer per their COC.
This is a very lucrative opportunity given the possibility of much higher pay once they will be able to use their COC.
However, the competition is very tight. Filipino seafarers aren’t just competing their fellows but to other nationality as well.
Now, 5 years has gone by and you weren’t able to use your license. It’s about to expire by this time. What will you do?

Renewal of your COC
The requirements are about the same as normal renewal of COC. But wait, there’s a catch. Those who did not able to use their license, are required to retake the MARINA Practical Assessment Examination.
Yes, that’s all you need to take. Once you finish that, gather the remaining requirements of COC renewal that can be found on MISMO.
The other requirement which is 3 months supernumerary capacity is not so common and difficult to carry out. Hence, the practical assessment is the best option.
Let’s take a look at the requirements for COC renewal as of March 2022:
Use the MISMO Platform
By using MISMO, you can conveniently schedule your COC renewal in various MARINA Regional Offices across the country.
As with other processes, use the MISMO platform from start to finish. As of early 2022, there is no need for the applicant to show at MARINA Offices. Printing of certificates can be done via MISMO.
Only applicants that needs to fix some problems or discrepancy with their documents will show up to MARINA offices nearest them.
